Okay, I admit it. I love to watch home improvement and remodeling shows on TV. They give me ideas that may work in my own home, and some of them I have even incorporated. I don't have the skills or the tools to take on major renovations, but my wife and I get decorating ideas that have given our home a good facelift.
I am most impressed by people's ability to look at what is and have a vision of what it might be. Without the construction or engineering background to know about things like removing walls or raising ceilings, it is amazing to me to watch these talented people instantly see beyond the visible and create a vision of the possible.
The one thing I have learned for sure is that getting to the end result, to the vision, to the dream always starts with demolition. On one of my favorite shows, Chip always looks forward to "Demo Day." I have found this to be a good life lesson as well -- getting from the old to the new begins with demolition of the old. And the demolition process, as I have observed it and participated in it, is quite messy.
We all have times in our lives when things are quite messy. Maybe our relationships with friends or loved ones are a mess. Perhaps our financial situation is a mess. Sometimes our job seems to be a mess or we have made such a mess out of our work history that our resume offers no hope of a better job. For many people beginning recovery, our whole lives seem to be a mess.
Consider this -- when things are a mess, it may be the demolition process preceding a remodel! Ideally, this remodel starts with a vision of the end result. But sometimes we have no vision at all, only the knowledge that demolition is necessary. In those times, proceed with the demolition and find others with a vision to help you. I have come to believe that when we are truly ready to make a change, others with a vision will appear.
So get on with it! It's DEMO DAY!
